INDIANAPOLIS -- Tennessee freshman Sadie Hammond qualified to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships later this month, the NCAA announced Wednesday.
The championships will be held from May 25-30 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hammond is the first Volunteer to compete in singles for UT since junior Eve Repic in 2014 as a freshman as well.
"It's so exciting to have all the hard work I put in this year pay off for a chance to compete in the NCAA tournament," Hammond said. "It's even more exciting to be able to play as a freshman. It's a great opportunity for me to play against the best players in college tennis, and I'm looking forward to taking advantage of this opportunity.
"Being able to represent Tennessee means so much to me - I wouldn't want to play for any other school. I want to make the university, my coaches, teammates, and family proud."
In dual-match play, Hammond competed in the No. 1 spot in singles for the entire season. So far this season, she has a team-high seven wins over ranked opponents.
Hammond, who earned All-SEC honors last week, has been ranked as high as 42nd in singles this season and is currently ranked 51st.
Hammond won't know who her opponent until May 24, when the official draws are released.
"I've always dreamed big, so my goal is to win the championship," Hammond said. "I have been putting in the work, so I'm going lay everything on the line in Tulsa, play with confidence, and believe in myself that I can win it all."
