TULSA, Okla. -- Tennessee freshman Sadie Hammond advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships with a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 win over Clemson's 51st-ranked Ayan Broomfield at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
In the first set, Hammond broke serve to go up 4-2 and took the last four games to win, 6-2.
Broomfield bounced back in the second, which went back and forth before she broke serve to go up 6-5 over Hammond and then held serve to take the second set, 7-5.
Early in the third set, Broomfield jumped out to a 3-1 lead. Hammond responded by winning five-consecutive games before ultimately taking the set, 7-5.
The win was Hammond's eighth against ranked opponents this season. She is also the first Volunteer to advance to the second round of the championships since All-American Kata Szekely did it in 2013.
Hammond will take on sixth-ranked Luisa Stefani from Pepperdine in the second round Thursday.
