May 11, 2016 | Rowing
IRVING, Texas. -- Tennessee rowing placed 13 student-athletes on the Big 12 Academic All-Rowing team announced Wednesday by the conference office.
11 student-athletes made the Big 12 Academic All-Conference first team and two earned spots on the second team. This is the second straight Academic All-Conference Award for six members of the team.
Tennessee's senior class of Erin Gibbemeyer, Katie King, Harper Lucas, Nikole Metz, McDarragh Minnock and Morgan Suffridge will race in their final home race of the season this weekend at the Big 12 Rowing Championship. All six also earned first team honors and it was the second consecutive season that Gibbemeyer, King, Lucas, Minnock and Suffridge received plaudits from the Big 12 for their work in the classroom.
Junior Kaitlyn Wallace joins the group of five seniors in earning the award for a second consecutive season. Sophomores Nicole Chojnacky, Jennifer Davis, Chandler Frumin, Aja List, Nicole Burnett and Lauren Higdon earned Academic All-Conference honors in their first year of eligibility.
King, Suffridge and Wallace have all previously won academic recognition as they earned Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medals in 2013-14 before Tennessee joined the Big 12. King received that honor for the 2012-13 season as well.
First Team Big 12 Academic All-Conference members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the Second Team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
