Vols Record Three Tennis Shutouts Sunday
April 03, 2016 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee men's tennis team did not drop a set in three shutout victories Sunday at Goodfriend Tennis Center and Barksdale Stadium.
The Vols (11-12) opened the morning by defeating Murray State twice indoors by 5-0 scores. In the afternoon, the Vols swept Austin Peay 7-0 outside at Barksdale Stadium.
Tennessee went 5-1 over weekend matches on Friday and Sunday.
Sophomore Preston Touliatos and freshman Jack Heslin led the way with three singles victories each. Touliatos is now up to a team-leading 20 wins this season. In doubles junior Jack Schipanski and sophomore Luis Valero won a pair of doubles matches to improve to 17-4.
"I thought the guys handled the day really well," Tennessee head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "They played a lot of tennis over the course of three days, and their attitudes were great. Austin Peay and Murray State came in and pushed us and brought the best out of our players, which was really good."
The matches against Murray State were played in alternative experimental formats. The first match had four singles and one doubles match, and the second match had three singles and two doubles matches. The match against Austin Peay was in the standard dual match format.
Junior Sunay Bhat won his first three career doubles wins in team play over the weekend and was a part of two winning doubles matches Sunday with freshmen Timo Stodder and Srdjan Jakovljevic.
UP NEXT: The Vols play their final two home matches next weekend, hosting LSU on Friday at 2 p.m. and Texas A&M on Sunday at noon.
"We needed to come out and work hard on the things we've been talking about, and that's what we did. It was a successful day," Winterbotham said. "I'm proud of the guys. It's been a tough year for them, but they've got really good attitudes. That's impressive and we'll take that into Friday."
TENNESSEE CONNECTIONS: There were certain Tennessee connections on the opposing coaching staffs. Murray State head coach Mel Purcell was an NCAA doubles champion for the Vols in 1980. Austin Peay assistant coach Maria Sorbello was a women's tennis letterwinner who graduated in 2011.
"I'm very appreciated of coach Purcell, coach [Ross] Brown, coach Maria coming here," Winterbotham said. "It's always great to former Vols back."
