Hammond Earns SEC Honors
April 27, 2016 | Women's Tennis
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- After a strong season at the top spot of the Tennessee women's tennis team's lineup, freshman Sadie Hammond was named second-team All-SEC and to the SEC All-Freshman team.
Hammond, a native of Belgrade, Maine, is the 31st Volunteer to earn All-SEC honors. She is just the fourth Vol to be named to the All-Freshman team. Junior Eve Repic was the most recent player to receive both honors, doing so in 2014 for Tennessee.
"It's such a privilege to receive these honors, but more importantly, receive these honors under the University of Tennessee," Hammond said. "It's an honor to wear Tennessee across my chest, and I couldn't have made it this far without my coaches and teammates. There's still so much more to achieve and improve on. I have my standards set higher than they were this season and I'm looking forward to improving to be the best player I can be, and give my all for my team and Tennessee."
Hammond led the team in singles win with 21, starting the season by winning seven consecutive matches in straight sets in singles and winning her flight at the Furman Fall Classic. She advanced to the semifinals of the Ohio Valley regional in singles.
In dual-match play, Hammond competed in the No. 1 spot in singles and doubles for the entire season. On March 16, she was named the SEC Player of the Week after picking two ranked singles wins over No. 21 Andie Dikosavljevic from Auburn and No. 31 Andie Daniell from Alabama. Daniell was announced the SEC Freshman of the Year.
Hammond leads the team in ranked wins, with seven in singles and three in doubles. During the most recent ITA rankings, Hammond was 51st in singles and 86th in doubles with Repic.
With her singles ranking, Hammond is in consideration for the NCAA Singles Championships, which will be held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The championships will take place from May 25-30.
