KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --The Volunteers pushed past the Mountaineers in Tuesday night's contest, posting seven runs on seven hits. The Orange and White tallied four extra-base hits, including a base-clearing triple by Matt Waldren, in Tennessee's 7-5 defeat of Appalachian State.
With the victory, the Volunteers (19-14, 3-9 SEC) move to 13-4 in the all-time series against Appalachian State (8-25, 3-12 Sun Belt), including a 13-3 mark in games played in Knoxville.
Led by catcher Benito Santiago (2-for-5, RBI), left fielder Vincent Jackson (2-for-2, RBI) and substitute designated hitter Matt Waldren (2-for-2, 3 RBI), Tennessee scattered seven hits against the Mountaineers while taking advantage of nine free passes granted by App State's staff.
Tennessee came out swinging in the first to take a 2-0 lead, as Nick Senzel (1-for-4, RBI) launched an RBI-triple followed by an RBI-double off the bat of Jackson. Senior Derek Lance furthered the Vols' lead in the second, bringing Max Bartlett home on a single through the right side.
The Volunteers added one run in the fifth, while App State continued to chip away at Tennessee's advantage in the sixth to make it a two-run ballgame at 4-2.
After entering the game in the sixth for Leno Ramirez, Waldren then came up big for the Vols in the seventh to put UT ahead, 7-2. With two outs, Senzel, Jackson and Jordan Rodgers reached base via two walks and an infield hit before Waldren ripped a three-run triple down the right field line.
In the ninth, App State rallied to post three runs on a two-out double to left center field by Tanner Mann-Fix. The Vols then proceeded to retire the next batter to end the game.
In his fourth start of the season, righty Eric Freeman dealt 4.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits while tying his career high with four strikeouts against the Mountaineers. With the Tennessee win, Freeman picked up his third victory of the season.
LeftyZach Reid(1.0) and junior righthanderHunter Martin(1.1) traded turns in relief against Appalachian State before seniorSteven Kane(1.0) went to the hill in the eighth. Kane worked quickly through a three up, three down inning to set up closer Jon Lipinski in the ninth. The righthander went on to allowthree runs on four hits and fanned one batter.
