KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --Tennessee Rowing will compete in their first official race of the spring season as they take part in the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Mission Bay in San Diego, California.
Tennessee will send three boats into competition with the Varsity 8+ competing at 7:44 a.m ET/10:44 a.m. ET. The Vols are in Heat A of the Women's Collegiate Varisty Cal Cup. The second varsity eight will compete at 9:44 a.m. PT/12:44 p.m. ET in the first of three heats in the Women's Collegiate 2V which will vie for the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Memorial Trophy. Tennessee will also have a boat in the Women's Collegiate Varsity 4+ which starts at 8:56 a.m. PT/11:56 a.m. ET and will compete for the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup.
The competition will continue on Sunday with the Novice and Grand Finals for each of the three races.
"The Crew Classic is an exciting race; not only because of the amazing venue but because of the opportunity to line up with 5-6 other crews on a fully buoyed course much the way our championship races are set up later in the season," Head Coach Lisa Glenn said.
This is the first official race of the spring, but the Vols have competed in three separate friendlies. Tennessee took on Central Florida in Orlando on February 20th before back-to-back scrimmages against Minnesota and Indiana. The Vols took on the Golden Gophers on March 17th before facing off against the Hoosiers two days later.
In the fall, the rowing team competed at three different races. UT sent one boat to the Head of the Charles race in Boston. The squad of four freshman (Kirsten Girard, Pari Baker, Badia Shehab and Hannah Malzahn) along with redshirt senior McDarragh Minnock took ninth place in the Women's Championship 4+ race. The team then sent two 8+ novice boats to the Secret City Head Race where the novices got their first taste of collegiate rowing. UT finished up the fall season at the Head of the Hooch where six boats competed in three races. The top 8+ boat took fourth place while the Volunteers also took fifth in the Championship 4+ race.
This is the second consecutive season Tennessee has crossed the country to compete in the San Diego Crew Classic. Last year the team took first place in Heat C to qualify for the Grand Final where it took fourth place. The Varsity 4+ won the Petite Final after a third place finish in their opening heat. The team also competed in the Crew Classic in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2012.
