March 31, 2016 | Rowing
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --Tennessee senior Harper Lucas has been selected for the NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women’s Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship.
Lucas is one of only 26 student-athletes nationwide to earn the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship this year. Lucas is a four-year member of the varsity rowing team. She will graduate in May with a degree in Kinesiology after being named to the 2013 and 2014 Conference USA Honor Roll in addition to earning a spot on the 2015 Academic All-Rowing First Team.
Lucas was the coxswain for the first varsity eight squad at the Big 12 Rowing Championship last season as the Vols finished in fourth place with a time of 6:57.53.
“Harper Lucas is a role-model student-athlete who has contributed greatly to our University during her four years in Knoxville, and she is poised to make a deep and lasting impact on the world of athletics following her graduation,” Faculty Athletic Representative Donald Bruce said. “She is goal-oriented and dedicated, and is genuinely interested in the well-being and success of those around her. She has been a positive presence not only within our athletics program (e.g., by her involvement with SAAC), but also in the broader university community (as with her participation in a Habitat for Humanity build).”
“Harper is committed to a career in physical therapy,” Bruce continued. “She has accumulated over 100 hours shadowing physical therapists and other healthcare professionals in an effort to learn more about the field and enhance her commitment to long-term study.”
This is the second consecutive year a Tennessee rower has earned the award as former rower Sarah McAuliffe earned the same award last season.
The Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics programs were developed by the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics and the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. The goal of the enhancement programs is to increase the pool of and opportunities for qualified minority and female candidates in intercollegiate athletics through postgraduate scholarships. The NCAA awards $7,500 to 13 ethnic minorities and 13 female college graduates who will be entering their initial year of postgraduate studies.
Lucas will attend the NCAA Career in Sports Forum which is an annual educational forum held in Indianapolis that brings together 200 selected student-athletes and scholarship recipients for four days to learn and explore potential careers in sports, with the primary focus on intercollegiate athletics.
