Schaub Named Women's Tennis Assistant Coach
November 30, 2016 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee women's tennis head coach Alison Ojeda on Wednesday announced that Ty Schaub has joined the program as assistant coach.
"I am thrilled to bring Ty Schaub to Tennessee," Ojeda said. "My goal here is to win an SEC Championship and adding Ty's experience both as a player and a coach will really help. He is an incredibly selfless individual who has the heart of a champion. He played for one of the best coaches in the country, Ty Tucker, at The Ohio State University."
During his time at OSU, Schaub's teams finished with a record of 129-8, claiming four Big Ten Conference Championships. He was the team captain in 2009 when the Buckeyes were No. 1 in the country and reached the NCAA Finals.
"I could not be more excited about getting this opportunity to coach at Tennessee," Schaub said. "Alison has been someone I have respected as a coach and friend for a long time now, so getting to work with her is amazing. I know Alison is committed to achieving big things at UT, and I'm thankful for the opportunity to assist her with that. I look forward to bringing a lot of hard work and passion to this tennis program. I cannot wait to start working towards an SEC title."
Since graduating in 2009, Schaub, a native of Lexington, Ohio, has been gaining valuable experience in the coaching field, assisting at Cornell (2009-10), Pennsylvania (2011-14), Iowa (2014-15) and San Diego (2015-16).
Schaub has found success at each of his stops in coaching, specifically in recruiting. At his first stop, he immediately began working extensively with the recruitment of players to Cornell. By the time his three-year stint at Penn came to an end, he had helped bring in three top-25 classes.
At Iowa, Schaub's coaching career began to pick up traction, helping the Hawkeyes reach their highest ranking in program history at No. 42 in the country. He also coached Matt Hagan and Dominic Patrick to a Big Ten Doubles Championship, the second for Iowa.
At his most recent stop, Schaub assisted in San Diego's West Coast Conference Championship. The Toreros ranked as high as 16th in the country, a program record. He coached Uros Petronijevic to All-American status and the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships. He played a major role in the successful recruitment of the No. 3 ranked recruit in college tennis for the 2017 class, including the top-ranked junior in Portugal, Guilherme Osorio.
"As a coach, Ty shows an unwavering ability to create an atmosphere that his teams thrive in," Ojeda said. "He helped USD win a conference championship last year and then followed that up with recruiting the No. 3 recruiting class in the country for 2017. I trust Ty and am extremely excited to get to work with him."
Schaub has family ties to the UT women's tennis program. His sister, Melissa Schaub, was an All-American in 2003 and is currently the head coach at The Ohio State University.
"I have known Rocky Top as a special place ever since I came with my older sister on her recruiting trip back in 2001," Schaub said. "My sister loved every minute of her years being a Vol, and this has always been at the very top of my list for schools where I would want to coach."
Schaub lettered at OSU from 2006-09, where he graduated with a degree in Communication with a focus in Analysis and Practices. During the 2006-07 season, he was named a Big Ten Conference Men's Tennis Sportsmanship Award Winner.
The spring season begins Jan. 14 at the Michigan Invite in Ann Arbor. The team opens team play Jan. 21 against Air Force and Middle Tennessee at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
