November 03, 2016 | Football
Three members of the Tennessee football team earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors on Thursday as Parker Henry, Todd Kelly Jr. and Dylan Wiesman were recognized among the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Henry, Kelly and Wiesman were selected to the District 3 team by the College Sports Information Directors of America and are now eligible for Academic All-America Team consideration. The last time Tennessee football boasted representatives on the Academic All-District Team was 2009 when placekicker Daniel Lincoln and offense lineman Cody Sullins were honored.
Henry, a redshirt sophomore, has appeared in all eight games and has served as the Vols' primary holder this season. A native of Hendersonville, Tennessee, who played both quarterback and defensive back at Beech Senior High School, Henry boasts a 4.0 cumulative GPA in finance and was selected to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2015.
Kelly is majoring in biochemistry/cellular and molecular biology and holds a 3.33 cumulative GPA. The junior and Knoxville native has started every game at safety this season and leads the team in both total tackles (55) and interceptions (2). Kelly notched picks against then-No. 19 Florida and then No. 8 Texas A&M and posted a career-best 11 tackles against No. 1 Alabama. He was selected to the SEC Academic Honor Roll last season.
A kinesiology major boasting a 3.47 GPA, Wiesman has appeared in seven of Tennessee's eight games this season -- all starts. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native is a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and was named second team All-SEC by the Associated Press last season. This year, Wiesman has helped anchor an offensive line that paved the way to 498 yards of total offense in a win over Florida before helping UT to 684 yards of total offense (third-most in program history) at Texas A&M.
Student-athletes eligible for Academic All-District status are those holding a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale). Nominees must also have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and have completed at least one calendar year at the institution.
