A WIN WOULD ...
- Give UT a 75-18 all-time record in exhibition games.
- Give Tennessee a 13-game win streak in exhibition play.
THE OPPONENT
- Slippery Rock University, is a public, Division II school located in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, approximately 50 miles north of Pittsburgh.
- Head coach Kevin Reynolds builds primarily from the junior-college ranks, and 10 of Slippery Rock's 12 players are in their first year with the program.
SLIPPERY ROCK CONNECTION
- The Tennessee and Slippery Rock programs do share one historic hardwood connection in former coach Cliff Wettig.
- From 1973-75, Wettig guided Slippery Rock to a 33-17 record as that program's head coach. He was then hired as an assistant at Tennessee under the legendary Ray Mears.
- When illness forced Mears to sit out the 19777-78 season, Wettig took over as the Vols' acting head coach.
- Vol Network basketball analyst Bert Bertelkamp played for Wettig that year. "Coach Wettig was a good man who really cared about us," Bertelkamp said. "He was also a tough competitor who demanded a lot out of his players."
TOUGH SCOUT
- Slippery Rock has been a difficult opponent to scout, as the program does not recruit freshmen. Head coach Kevin Reynolds builds primarily from the junior-college ranks, and 10 of the team's 12 players are in their first year with the program.
- The roster features no freshmen and only one sophomore.
- Five members of this year's team were teammates last season at Marshalltown (Iowa) Community College.
- SRU's lone returning players are senior guards Naquil Jones and Jordan Marrow. Jones averaged 6.2 points and 1.8 rebounds last year in 12 appearances with three starts. Marrow appeared in 20 games, averaging 3.4 points and 1.4 rebounds per game.
- Slippery Rock competes in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference—an 18-school league divided into Eastern and Western divisions. Last week, The Rock was picked in the preseason coaches poll to finish seventh in the Western division.
- Thursday's contest is the rst of two exhibition games for Slippery Rock this preseason; the team plays at Central Michigan on Saturday.
TENNESSEE IN EXHIBITION PLAY
- Tennessee is 74-18 all-time in exhibition games. That includes a 57-10 mainland record, and a 17-8 record overseas.
- The Vols have won 12 straight exhibition games dating to a 79-64 loss to Indianapolis Nov. 8, 2010, at Thompson-Boling Arena.
- Last November, the Vols posted a 96-83 exhibition victory over Alabama-Huntsville.
TENNESSEE ROSTER BREAKDOWN
- The Vols' 2016-17 roster features 16 players (13 scholarship student-athletes) representing six states as well as Ontario, Canada.
- There are five Vols who hail from the state of Tennessee, three from North Carolina, and a pair of players are from Alabama. Georgia, Illinois, Texas and Utah also are represented.
- Tennessee has two seniors, one junior, five sophomores and eight freshmen (including one redshirt freshman).
- Thirteen Vols stand 6-5 or shorter, and three players are 6-6 or taller.
- For the second straight season, UT has just three players listed at 6-7 or taller.
