November 16, 2016 | Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Make sure to catch Tennessee sophomore midfielder Katie Cousins in action at this year’s FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Papua New Guinea.
Cousins is part of the United States squad that is going for its third FIFA U-20 World Cup title after winning the tournament in 2008 and 2012. The U.S. also won the first ever youth World Cup in 2002 when it was a U-19 tournament.
The Red, White and Blue play New Zealand on Thursday at 4 a.m. ET and the game can be seen live on Fox Sports 1 and NBC Universo. The U.S. played France to a scoreless draw in its opening game of the tournament on Monday. New Zealand defeated Ghana on a late goal and currently sits atop the group with three points. The Stars and Stripes wrap up group play on Nov. 21 against Ghana.
Cousins did not see action in the tie with France but is expected to start tomorrow’s game against New Zealand. The Forest, Va., native and former Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year is playing in her second major tournament as part of the U-20 national team after participating in the 12 Nations Tournament in March of 2013. Cousins was named an SEC All-Freshmen Team selection after her first year on Rocky Top in 2015.
