Volleyball Loses to Ole Miss to Start Road Trip
November 11, 2016 | Volleyball
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Tennessee Volunteers started the weekend with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 26-24) loss to Ole Miss on Friday at The Pavilion at Ole Miss.
Freshman Tessa Grubbs led the Vols with 13 kills, and freshman Sedona Hansen recorded her 13th double-double of the season with 40 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore libero Brooke Schumacher had a career-best 20 digs.
With the loss, the Vols (15-11, 5-8 SEC) and Ole Miss (15-11, 4-9) have split the season series. Tennessee had won 3-0 at Thompson-Boling Arena on Oct. 14.
In the first set, Ole Miss broke ahead by winning seven of eight points to take a 12-8 lead. The Rebels led by as many as nine points at 20-11 and eventually wrapped up the set, 25-19. Grubbs and Jimenez had five kills each in the set.
Ole Miss pulled ahead 18-11, but the Vols closed fast. Bri Holmes recorded three consecutive kills from the outside to fend off three set points to bring the Vols within a point at 24-23, but Ole Miss got the next point and set on a Tennessee service error.
The third set was marked by two swift momentum changes to end the match. The Vols broke a 20-20 tie by scoring four unanswered points to take a 24-20 lead on a kill by Alyssa Andreno. Ole Miss answered with a 6-0 run, saving four set points to tie the match at 24-24 before winning the final two to seal the win.
The Vols play Arkansas on Sunday at 4 p.m. Eastern.
NOTES
- Tennessee Starters: Sedona Hansen, Erica Treiber, Alyssa Andreno, Kanisha Jimenez, Tessa Grubbs, Kendra Turner and Brooke Schumacher at libero. It was Andreno's second consecutive match to start at middle blocker rather than right side.
- Sedona Hansen surpassed the 900-assist milestone this season. She now has 936, which ranks fifth-most by a Vol in a season in the 25-point rally scoring era (since 2008).
- With nine kills, Bri Holmes passed the 850 career kill milestone. She has 858.
- The Vols' match against Ole Miss was a rare morning start. The Rebels' volleyball venue is under renovation, so the volleyball match took place at The Pavilion at Ole Miss before two basketball games scheduled later in the day.
