TULSA, Okla. — Tennessee junior Luis Valero and Jack Schipanski opened the doubles tournament with a victory Thursday at the ITA All-American Championships.
Valero and Schipanski, ranked fifth nationally, defeated the 23rd-ranked Stanford team of Tom Fawcett and David Wilczynski 7-6(5), 7-6(5) to advance.
On Friday, the Vol duo will face the North Florida qualifier team of Jack Findel-Hawkins and Lasse Muscheites.
Valero lost his singles match Thursday, falling to 46th-ranked Aron Hiltzik of Illinois 6-3, 6-3. He will be in the consolation draw.
The Vols have a long tradition of success in doubles at the ITA All-American. Tennessee has won five national titles there, the most of any school.
GEORGIA TECH INVITATIONAL BEGINS: With Valero and Schipanski still going strong in Tulsa, the rest of the team is playing at the Georgia Tech Invitational, which runs Friday through Sunday in Atlanta.
Sophomores Timo Stodder and Srdjan Jakovljevic are playing the Division I draw with Stodder seeded third in the field. Freshmen Steven Karl and Scott Jones are in the Division II draw. Senior Sunay Bhat, junior Preston Touliatos and freshman Luca Wiedenmann are in the Division III draw.
Stodder and Jones, who have three top 25 doubles wins already this season, are playing in the top doubles draw.
