Vols Start Strong in Regionals

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Tennessee women’s tennis team had a nice start to the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships on Friday, winning four of their five matches.
Senior Eve Repic and sophomore Sadie Hammond picked up two 8-5 wins in doubles, defeating the duo of Marina Espana and Ioanna Markesini from ETSU and the team of Olivia Boesing and Elle Stokes from Louisville.
As the No. 1 seed in doubles, the Volunteers will take on Vanderbilt’s Sydney Campbell and Christina Rosca, the fifth-seeded team in the draw, for a spot in the quarterfinals Saturday.
In singles, No. 35 Hammond downed Abbie Pahz from Louisville, 6-4, 6-2. Repic redounded after dropping the first set to beat UT Chattanooga’s Caroline Hall, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Senior Brittany Lindl fell to Markesini from ETSU, 6-2, 6-2.
The rest of the Vols competed in the IU Regional. Freshman Johanna Silva picked up a win over Nina Van Oost of Northwestern, 6-0, 7-5. Sophomore Ashley Bongart defeated Miami (OH)’s Emily Struble, 6-4, 6-4. They will play in the second round of their flight Saturday.
In doubles, Tennessee’s only win came when sophomore Kim Kermet and Bongart downed Western Michigan’s duo of Azcui and Eristavi, 8-4.
