Vols Set for Regional Tournaments

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee women's tennis team returns to action this weekend, competing in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships and IU Regional.

The ITA regional championships will be hosted by Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro and will be played at the Adams Tennis Complex on Oct. 20-24. Admission is free for the event.

Sophomore Sadie Hammond, who is ranked 35th in the country and is the No. 3 seed for singles, and seniors Eve Repic and Brittany Lindl will represent the Vols in the main draw of the tournament. In doubles, Hammond and Repic will team up together as the No. 1 seed in the field of 32, boasting two ranked wins already on the season.

Since joining the Ohio Valley region in 2009, the Volunteers have accounted for six titles (3 singles, 3 doubles), with the most recent titles coming in 2012 when Kata Szekely won in singles and in doubles with Brynn Boren. In 2009, Natalie Pluskota and Caitlin Whoriskey advanced all the way to the finals of the National Indoor Championships after winning the region.

Tennessee's other players in action this week (sophomores Ashley Bongart and Kim Kermet plus freshmen Ariadna Riley and Johanna Silva) will travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the IU Regional on Oct. 21-23. Nine schools will be represented at the tournament, including Notre Dame, Purdue and Northwestern.
