January 26, 2016 | Women's Basketball
KNOXVILLE -- After leading her team in scoring for the first two times in her career, Tennessee guard Te'a Cooper has been selected as the SEC Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Cooper, a 5-foot-8 rookie from Powder Springs, Ga. (McEachern H.S.), became the first Lady Vol to earn league freshman of the week accolades since Mercedes Russell did so the week of Dec. 23-30, 2013.
Coming off the bench for UT, Cooper posted back-to-back personal SEC highs in scoring and averaged 15.5 points, 2.0 assists and 1.0 rebounds for Tennessee in a pair of games last week.
She shot 56.5% from the field (13-23), including 80% beyond the three-point arc (4-of-5) vs. Vanderbilt (13-5) and #12/9 Kentucky (15-3) in leading UT in scoring in both contests.
Cooper fired in 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting in a 58-49 victory over Vandy on Thursday, leading UT in scoring for the first time in her career.
She once again paced UT's scoring vs. UK, knocking down 7-of-11 shots, including 3-of-4 tries behind the three-point line, and added three assists.
For the season, Cooper is averaging 8.4 points, 2.1 assists, 1.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game while playing 21.4 minutes per contest. She has scored in double figures on seven occasions.
