ANN MEYERS DRYSDALE MIDSEASON WATCH LIST
ST. LOUIS, MO. -- The U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced the midseason watch list Monday for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, and Tennessee redshirt sophomore Diamond DeShields is among 16 candidates for that honor.
The watch list includes potential winners of women’s national player of the year (Ann Meyers Drysdale Award).
DeShields, a 6-1 guard from Norcross, Ga. (Norcross H.S.), leads the Lady Vols with a 15.1 points-per-game scoring average. She also leads UT in assists (45), steals (38), field goals (107) and three-pointers (19) and is second in free throws (39). She also contributes 5.3 rebounds per game, which ranks fourth on the team.
The first-year Lady Vol has posted two games of 30 or more points and four of 20+, and has scored in double figures on 15 occasions this season, including a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds vs. Texas.
The honor will be bestowed at the College Basketball Awards gala in Oklahoma City on April 11, 2016, at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Access Sports, a non-profit organization committed to supporting various charitable causes, will serve as host for the gala. Funds from the gala are used to support youth basketball programs in Oklahoma that allow disadvantaged youth the opportunity to participate in leagues and training.
The USBWA, comprised of nearly 1,000 sports journalists covering college basketball for newspapers, magazines and websites, will select the recipient of the award. This will be the first time the women’s college player of the year will be featured at the gala.
