Vols End Fall Classic on High Note
September 27, 2015 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Four Tennessee Volunteers advanced to their flight championship in singles on Sunday at the Furman Fall Classic.
Senior Tiffany Tavares, juniors Eve Repic and Brittany Lindl and freshman Sadie Hammond all advanced, due to time constraint, only Hammond and Repic were able to compete in their match.
Hammond, who won two matches yesterday, came into the match without losing a set. In the first set against Clemson's Theresa Piontek, she blew past Piontek, 6-1. The second set was moved inside due rain, but Hammond didn't lose any momentum, taking the set 6-2 and winning flight two of the tournament. In her last two matches, she only lost eight combined games out of 32 total.
"I'm very excited about my wins this weekend," Hammond said. "I trusted my coaches and the work we put in. I'm happy all the hard work paid off. I couldn't have done it without my coaches; Sonia got me through my matches. This tournament win gets me even more pumped for the next one. I feel great, and I learned so much. I'm ready to get back to work and keep improving."
Repic, who was facing Fernanda Navarro from Clemson, dropped the first set 6-1. After moving inside due to rain, Repic flipped the score, winning the second set 6-1 and forcing a 10-point tiebreaker. Unfortunately, the tiebreaker ended 10-7 in favor of Navarro, finishing Repic as second in the flight.
Repic outlasted Summer Dvorak of Vanderbilt, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (9), to move to the flight championship match, Tavares blew past Furman's Blair Martin, 6-3, 6-2, to advance, and Lindl bested Alabama's Natalia Maynetto, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7), despite dropping the first set.
Freshmen Kim Kermet and Margo Taylor both fell in their first matches of the day, closing out the second round of singles.
Kermet and fellow freshman Ashley Bongart closed out the tournament, competing in make-up matches in the third round due to opponents leaving early. Bongart fell 6-2, 7-5 to Ally Miller-Krasilnikov from Clemson. Kermet ended the day with a blowout 6-3, 6-0 win over Clemson's Jenny Moinard.
The Vols will be back in action in two weeks, as they travel to Purdue to compete in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships.
