Vols Continue to Impress at Furman
September 26, 2015 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- After Day 2 of the Furman Fall Classic, the Tennessee Volunteers show bright signs for the future, during a round and a half of singles.
The day began with freshman Ashley Bongart taking on No. 49 Frances Atlick of Vanderbilt. Atlick clinched the NCAA Title for the Commodores back in the spring. Bongart quickly jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first set. All the momentum favored Tennessee, but the experience of Atlick set, winning the second set 6-3 and then narrowly escaping the tiebreaker, 10-8.
Although Bongart lost, it was difficult to tell she was competing in her first collegiate singles match, going to the wire in a near-upset.
Also in her first collegiate singles match, freshman Sadie Hammond took on No. 81 Gabriella Castaneda from Florida State. Hammond broke serve a couple of times to take a 6-3 lead in the first set. Castaneda played a tough second set but couldn’t stop the freshman from winning her first match, 6-3, 7-5.to the second round of flight two to face
Hammond advanced to take on South Carolina’s Rachel Rohrabacher. After going down 3-2 early, Hammond won seven consecutive games to put the match away and advance to the flight championship with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Hammond will play Theresa Piontek tomorrow.
Junior Eve Repic bested Ally Krasilnikov of Clemson, 6-0, 7-6 (5) to advance to the second round, and senior Tiffany Tavares fought from behind to beat Ellie Zogg from South Carolina, 6-7 (1), 6-4, 1-0 (4), after moving from outside to inside due to inclement weather. Both Vols will begin tomorrow with their second round matches.
Also advancing in the first round was junior Brittany Lindl, who won by default after Megen Cochran of South Carolina withdrew from the tournament.
Freshmen Kim Kermet and Margo Taylor both nearly won their first matches, falling in tiebreakers for the third set. Both will compete in two matches tomorrow.
Due to inclement weather, only one round of singles was completed, with two flights one and two playing the second round at 8:30 a.m. Flights three through six will finish the second round tomorrow followed by round three of singles.
