BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Tennessee junior middle blocker Raina Hembry was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Hembry, a native of Portland, Ore., helped UT to three victories over the weekend with her play at the net. Tennessee won the College of Charleston Classic and is off to a 12-0 start for the first time in the NCAA era.
Hembry earned all-tournament honors for her performance. In three matches, she had 16 total blocks and averaged 1.45 blocks per set. She matched her season best with seven blocks against Jacksonville on Saturday.
She also helped Tennessee offensively with 2.45 kills per set. She had nine kills and hit .571 in a win over Wofford and had 12 more kills in the Jacksonville match.
Tennessee’s defense held opponents to .166 hitting last week. Through 12 matches, only one team has hit above .200 (Jacksonville, .201).
The award marks back-to-back weeks a Tennessee player has earned conference honors. Last week, middle hitter Erica Treiber was SEC Freshman of the Week.
