September 11, 2015 | Volleyball
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Tennessee volleyball team extended its season-opening winning streak to 10 matches with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-17) win over Wofford to start the College of Charleston Invitational at TD Arena.
The Vols have two matches tomorrow, taking on Jacksonville at 10:30 a.m. and Charleston at 7 p.m. to conclude the two-day tournament.
Tennessee is now off to a 10-0 start this season, the best in the Rob Patrick coaching era (1997-present). It is the best start for the program since going 11-0 to open the 1986 season.
"Wofford put a lot of pressure on us with their serving and tremendous defense," Tennessee head coach Rob Patrick said. "It took us a lot of swings to get kills today. We're getting everyone's best shot right now, and I'm excited that we're able to take that and up our play."
Junior outside hitter Bri Holmes led the way with 19 kills, her most in Tennessee uniform. Freshman Erica Treiber matched her career high with 11 kills. Lexi Dempsey directed the offense with 43 assists.
Junior Bridgette Villano led the way with 20 digs.
Wofford surged late in the first set, winning six of the last seven points to take the opening set 25-22.
It was the third time this season the Vols had lost the first set but the third time the team has rebounded to win the second. Down 18-16, Tennessee tied the match and then took the lead on back-to-back kills by Holmes. Wofford came back to tie the match at 20-20, but the Vols closed the set on the a five-point streak, which included four attack errors by Wofford.
Tennessee hit .516 in the third set to pull away for a 25-17 win. The Vols kept up the pace in the fourth set, winning 25-17. Fittingly, Holmes sealed the match with a kill up the line.
