Nagy Accepts Bid to U.S. Amateur

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee senior Michael Nagy received notice that he will compete in the 115th U.S. Amateur Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Illinois, which takes place Aug. 17-23.
“I am really excited for the opportunity. I have put in a lot of hard work this summer, and it has been paying off,” Nagy said.
The U.S. Amateur format combines stroke play and match play throughout the week. The 312 competitors will complete two rounds of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday. Following stroke play, the lowest 64 scorers will advance to match play, which begins Wednesday and concludes with the championship round Sunday (36 holes).
Nagy completed his junior campaign on Rocky Top with two top 10 finishes––the Colleton River Collegiate and Jackrabbit Invitational––and a stroke average of 73.75.
The Manistique, Michigan, native also posted four rounds in the 60s during his junior season including a career-low 66 at the Jackrabbit Invitational.
Nagy looks to mimic the recent success of former Vols at the U.S. Amateur Championship. Oliver Goss, who competed at Tennessee from 2012 to 2014, finished as the 2013 U.S. Amateur runner-up.
The USGA will use two courses at Olympia Fields Country Club as part of the championship. Both courses will play to a par of 70 and stretch over 7,000 yards.
While Olympia Fields has yet to host the U.S. Amateur Championship, the club is no stranger to major tournaments as it has held both the U.S. Open and PGA Championship twice.
FOX Sports 1 will broadcast portions of match play Wednesday through Friday. The coverage will switch to FOX for the semifinal matches on Saturday and the championship match on Sunday. Live coverage begins at 3 p.m. ET daily.
Visit USGA’s U.S. Amateur home for more information on the championship. Tee times will be announced at a later date.
