July 02, 2015 | Women's Tennis
With two years down in her collegiate career, rising junior Eve Repic has accepted a new challenge by competing for Team Canada in the World University Games in Gwangju City, South Korea, during the month of July.
"It's a great honor to be able to represent Canada at the World University Games in South Korea this summer," Repic said on her invitation to the games. "I look forward to competing for Team Canada, and I'm very excited at the special opportunity."
In her first two seasons with the Vols, Repic has a 38-23 record in singles, playing the majority of her matches in the No.1 or 2 spots. She was named the 2014 Ohio Valley Rookie of the Year and has twice been named the SEC Player of the Week. She made the 2014 SEC All-Freshman Team as well as the Second Team All-SEC.
Before departing from campus, Repic took time to do a Q&A so fans could get to know a little more about her:
Q: Where are you from, and what is it like there?
A: "I'm from Oakville, Ontario, Canada. It's nice. It's a suburb just outside of Toronto. It's very family-oriented, a lot of parks and schools. It's very nice to grow up in."
Q: Do you have any siblings?
A: "I have two sisters and a brother. Ingrid, she's an artist, so she's very creative, and she's a great painter. Steph actually goes to a really good school in Canada, Queens University, and Robert, he's just a little firecracker."
Q: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?
A: "I would really like to go to Sweden. I would want to go to Sweden. I've always wanted to go there. It seems like a nice place to go."
Q: What is your favorite amusement park?
A: "It's called Canada's Wonderland. It's located just outside of Toronto and has this huge roller coaster named The Behemoth, which is just so high and crazy. You're guaranteed to puke on it, but it's just an awesome ride."
Q: What is one thing that most people don't know about you?
A: "I really like going to art galleries. I think I've said that before, but I really enjoy the city life, going downtown, a lot of the different cultures in Toronto, a lot of trying different foods."
Q: What is your dream job?
A: "My dream job is to be a creative director at a fashion magazine."
Q: What is your favorite kind of music?
A: "Currently, I like a lot of indie rock, but to work out to music I like pop. My favorite song right now is called Loud Places by Jamie XX."
Q: What is your favorite sport besides tennis?
A: "I really like to watch hockey. It's probably the Canadian in me, but I really like to see it. I really enjoy it.
Q: How did you end up playing tennis?
A: "Funny story, my dad had this tiny racquetball racquet, and we would just mess around like inside the house when I was younger, then we would gradually go outside into the garage or driveway. We eventually went out to this club near my house. I got my first coach at the club, and I would have private lessons once a week. It picked up, so I started doing group lessons, and it just went from there."
Q: Why did you choose Tennessee?
A: "For many reasons: the great sports atmosphere, Sonia and Mike are fantastic coaches, and they've been doing it for such a long time, so I trust them. The facilities are just beyond anything I could've ever imagined. The opportunity to play tennis at such a high level in the SEC was fantastic, and to get away from home."
Q: What is your major?
A: "I am majoring in Global Studies. It's about how the world is globalized."
Q: Has college been what you expected it would be?
A: "It has been a lot of hard work and long hours studying as well as practicing. It has been really rewarding because you get to be on a team. You get to have freedom but also a lot of responsibility. I enjoy traveling around to all of the different states that we get to go play in. Overall, I enjoy it a lot."
Q: How often do you have homework?
A: "Every night. Now that I am a junior, I am sure it is going to be a lot more. If you stay on top of it and balance your time wisely, you will be alright."
Q: How do you manage schoolwork and tennis?
A: "I think the big thing is having an agenda and allotting time for homework but also having time for yourself. As long as you balance that, it has worked for me so far."
Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A: "In my spare time, I like to go downtown to Market Square. It's nice. I like to hang out with my friends, read and watch movies on Netflix."
Q: Where have you improved the most since last season?
A: "Since this last season, I think my fitness has gotten a lot better. I give that credit to our trainers. They have really set up a good plan for us. Physically, I have gotten stronger. It has allowed me to be able to play three-set matches more and put me into position to win those matches. Freshman year, I would get a little more tired and couldn't physically last. Also, my power on the court has improved. I am more aggressive with my shots."
Q: What is your goal for next season?
A: "My goal is to make NCAAs again, both individually and as a team. That would be awesome. Hopefully, I could be an All-American. The ultimate goal is to help my team out as best as I can."
Q: What match are you looking forward to the most next season?
A: "I am looking forward to Vanderbilt. They're an in-state rival and National Champions, so it would be nice to get a crack at them."
Q: If you could do one thing over in your career, what would it be?
A: "I probably would have stayed for a summer session after my freshman year. After this summer, I really feel like I have improved a lot more just in this little amount of time. I wish I would have stayed for at least one session after my freshman year."
