TORONTO -- Tennessee rising senior Sean Lehane took home the gold medal and the meet record Wednesday in the 200-meter backstroke at the Pan American Games.
Lehane won the title in a time of 1 minute, 57.47 seconds, coming from behind in the final 50 meters. Missouri junior and fellow American Carter Griffin was .71 seconds behind to finish second (1:58.18).
In the morning preliminaries, Lehane set the meet record in a time of 1:57.11. It was also the pool record at the new Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House.
Lehane had already established himself as one of the top 200-yard backstrokers in the college ranks, having won back-to-back SEC titles in his signature event. In March, he took second at the NCAA Championships. This was his first major international title, doing so in long course meters.
Wednesday was the second 1-2 finish Tennessee has been involved with so far at the Pan Am Games. On Sunday, sophomore David Heron took second place in the 10K open water race.
Former Vol Brad Craig was also in action Wednesday for Team USA. He won the B Final in 2:14.04.
