May 12, 2015 | Baseball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee pitcher Eric Freeman has been named to the 2015 Southeastern Conference Baseball Community Service Team for his efforts in giving back to the Knoxville community, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
The conference names a Community Service Team for each of its 21 league-sponsored sports, looking to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his community through superior service efforts.
The honor marks Freeman's second SEC Community Service Team nomination, as the Knoxville native also took home the recognition as a freshman in 2014.
"I'm proud of Eric for receiving this honor for the second consecutive year," Head Coach Dave Serrano said. "He exemplifies what a teammate and a student-athlete should be."
Earlier this year, Freeman participated in the Tennessee Baseball Halloween Extravaganza and VOLoween Children's Trick-or-Treat events on campus. He volunteered for the Dave Serrano Golf Classic benefitting Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee and was a key supporter in the Knoxville Challenger League scrimmage game in March, helping provide youngsters with special needs an opportunity to play recreational sports. The pitcher assisted with Tennessee's youth baseball camps during spring, summer and fall semesters and helped plan and execute Tennessee's Student-Athlete Movie Night in April 2015.
Last summer, Freeman assisted with the Laconia Muskrat youth baseball camps while playing summer ball in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Having also spent numerous hours visiting assisted living communities in the New England area, Freeman has continued to make special visits to assisted living developments in Knoxville this season.
