AUGUSTA, Ga. -- On Sunday, the Tennessee men's golf team finished strong at the 3M Augusta Invitational. The Vols had three players go under par, including a hole-in-one, en route to firing a final round 5-under par 283 to finish ninth at 4-under.
During the final round, the Vols carded their lowest round of the weekend at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. As a team, the Volunteers recorded an impressive 18 birdies and a hole-in-one during Sunday's 5-under par final round.
Junior Chad Merzbacher returned to form on Sunday, firing a 4-under par 68 to climb the leaderboard. Merzbacher's final round included five birdies and one bogey. The junior finished tied for 13th place at 4-under, his eighth top-25 finish of the season. Freshman Lorenzo Scalise also went under par on Sunday, posting a final round 71 (-1). Scalise found three birdies en route to finishing in a tie for 25th place at 1-under, his fifth top-25 finish of his freshman campaign.
Sophomore Jack Smith was the third Volunteer to shoot in red figures during the final round. Smith posted a 2-under par 70, which included five birdies and three bogeys. The Knoxville native was consistent, scoring 1-under on the front and following it up with 1-under on the back. Fellow sophomore Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara's front nine and back nine could not have been any different on Sunday. Serrano Guevara struggled on the front, making the turn at 5-over. He proceeded to bounce back and shoot 1-under on the back to finish 4-over on the round. Smith finished tied for 33rd place at 1-under, while Serrano Guevara finished tied for 54th place at 6-over.
Junior Michael Nagy's back-nine was one to remember. Nagy recorded his first hole-in-one as a Vol on the par-3 13th at Forest Hills Golf Club. "It was my second, I was 16 when I had my first," said Nagy. "It was a good way to spark the round after I could not get a putt to fall all day. It was a gap wedge from 135 (yards) and in the air it looked good. It was pretty awesome when it disappeared!" The junior shot 5-over on the front but followed it up with 3-under on the back, highlighted by the hole-in-one on the 13th, to finish the weekend in a tie for 68th at 12-over par.
New Mexico posted scores of 277-281-280--838 (-26) to capture the title by three strokes on Sunday. Georgia's Lee McCoy carded 68-68-64--200 (-16) to claim the individual crown.
The squad will be back in action April 17-19 when they head to the SEC Championship in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
