Vol Golf in 9th at 2015 SEC Championship

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- After day one at the 2015 SEC Championship, the Tennessee men's golf team sits in a tie for ninth place with a total of 284 (+4).
On Friday, Head Coach Jim Kelson witnessed a strong round from one of his sophomores, Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara. Serrano carded a first round 69 (-1) which included two birdies and one bogey. He currently sits in a tie for 15th place at 1-under. Competing in his first SEC Championship, freshman Lorenzo Scalise recorded the most first round birdies for the Vols. Scalise was 1-over on the front and 1-under on the back to finish the round even par and in a tie for 23rd place.
Sophomore Jack Smith found two birdies and two bogeys on the front and two bogeys on the back to finish the first day 2-over par and in a tie for 39th place. Junior Michael Nagy was 1-under on the front and 4-over on the back to finish 3-over par and in a tie for 47th place. Both Smith and Nagy will look to make a push for the Vols on Saturday.
The team's leader, junior Chad Merzbacher, rounded out the Volunteers' lineup with a first round 75 (+5). Merzbacher was 2-over on the front and found a birdie the 15th, but carded a double on the 18th to finish round one 5-over par and in a tie for 65th place.
Alabama, the 2013 and 2014 SEC Champion, sits in first place at 11-under par after day one at Sea Island. South Carolina's Matthew NeSmith, Kolton Crawford of Arkansas and Alabama's Robby Shelton currently are tied for the individual lead at 5-under par.
On Saturday, Tennessee will look to make a move when its second round gets underway at 7:30 a.m. (ET) at the Sea Island Golf Club.
