Vol Golf Sits 9th in Augusta

First and Second Round Stats
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- After a slow start at the 3M Augusta Invitational, the Tennessee men's golf team bounced back to post a second round 3-under par to sit in ninth place heading to Sunday's final round.
The Vols shot a 4-over par 292 during round one, and followed it up with a 3-under par 285 during the second round at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. As a team, the Volunteers recorded eight first round birdies, but filled the scorecard with red figures during the second round, carding 17 birdies as a group.
Freshman Lorenzo Scalise led the Vols on day one. Scalise shot an opening round 73 (+1) and followed it up with a second round 70 (-2) to wrap up the day 1-under par and in a tie for 30th place. The Italy native carded six birdies on the day and was one of three Vols to go under par during the second round.
Junior Chad Merzbacher carded an opening round 73 (+1) followed by a second round 71 (-1). Merzbacher ended round two on fire, shooting 3-under on the back-nine. Despite a hiccup on the par-4 eighth, the junior found five second round birdies to place himself in a tie for 37th place at even par. Sophomore Jack Smith's day was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 11th during round two. Smith followed up his opening round 75 (+3) with a second round 70 (-2) which included three birdies on top of his eagle. The Knoxville native currently sits in a tie for 44th place at 1-over par.
Sophomore Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara posted 71-75--146 to find himself in a tie for 49th place at 2-over par. Serrano Guevara led the Vols during the opening round, carding two birdies en route to a 1-under par 71. The sophomore followed it up with a 3-over par second round to slip to 2-over par. Junior Michael Nagy had a tough first round, posting an 8-over par 80. Nagy bounced back to shoot 1-under par on the front during the second round. The junior finished round two 2-over par to find himself in a tie for 71st place at 10-over par heading to Sunday.
New Mexico posted scores of 277-281--558 (-18) on day one to find themselves on top of the team leaderboard by one stroke heading to Sunday's final round. Brian Campbell of Illinois carded 70-65--135 (-9) to build himself a one stroke lead on top of the individual leaderboard.
The squad will look to make a run on Sunday morning as they go off the first tee at 8:30 a.m. (ET) alongside Houston and Oklahoma State.
