Hammond Signs With Lady Vols
April 29, 2015 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee added another player to its 2015 recruiting class on Wednesday, as Mercedes Hammond signed her Letter of Intent with the Volunteers.
Hammond, a native of Belgrade, Maine, was ranked No. 1169 in the WTA doubles rankings at the end of 2014, and she currently sits at No. 1160 in the rankings. Her highest ranking in singles was No. 1254 in October of 2014.
"She will be a great addition to our team," co-head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick said about Hammond. "She is an aggressive baseliner, and she has played a lot of competitive matches in the last year or so. I think she is going to bring a wealth of experience to our team next year."
Hammonds is no stranger to playing against top talent. She has been competing in ITF futures tournaments and challengers since 2011, including several semifinal appearances and a doubles title at the Plantation ITF tournament in 2013. With this experience, she will be able to help the team sooner rather than later.
"Experience is going to be a great asset," Hahn-Patrick said. "She's got a great knowledge for doubles, and she will help us immediately in our doubles lineup and singles as well."
Hammond will join Gabrielle Schuck, Ashley Bongart, Margo Taylor and Kimberly Kermet as part of the 2015 signing class. The players plan to join the team in the fall.
