ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- The Tennessee men's golf team sits in 13th place after day two of the 2015 SEC Men's Golf Championship. The Vols posted a second round 292 (+12) to fall to 16-over through two rounds. Final round play begins early Sunday morning.
After a tough first round, junior leader Chad Merzbacher bounced back to post the squad's lowest second round number Saturday morning. Merzbacher carded two birdies and three bogeys to finish 1-over par on the day and find himself in a tie for 52nd place with two other Vols.
Sophomore Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara was even through six during round two, but slipped to 6-over par after recording bogey, quadruple bogey, bogey on holes seven, eight and nine. Serrano promptly arose to the challenge and shot 2-under on the back to bring his second round total to 4-over par. He currently sits in a tie for 39th place at 1-over. Freshman Lorenzo Scalise was 1-under after the turn, but finished the day 4-over par after a tough stretch on the back. Scalise is currently tied for 45th place at 4-over heading to Sunday's final round.
Sophomore Jack Smith and junior Michael Nagy are both tied for 52nd place alongside Merzbacher. Nagy posted his second 73 (+3), while finding one birdie. Smith posted a 4-over par second round. The sophomore was the only Vol not to post any red numbers on Saturday, but will look to step up to the plate and climb the leaderboard on Sunday morning.
Alabama currently holds a three stroke lead at 17-under par after the first two rounds at Sea Island. South Carolina's Matthew NeSmith is holding down a one stroke lead for the individual title at 11-under par.
On Sunday, Tennessee's final round begins on the 10th tee at 8:10 a.m. (ET) alongside Mississippi State.
