HOOVER, Ala. -- Despite rainy conditions for the majority of the day, the No. 14 Tennessee women's golf carded a first round score of 293 to finish in three-way tie for first place in the first round of the SEC Championship. The three-day event is being held at the Greystone Golf & Country Club on the Legacy Course (par 72, 6,308 yards).
"We just wanted to play well and do our job, and the fact that we were able to do that and finish in first place is great," head coach Judi Pavon said. "The weather conditions were so tough. It was so wet and there was steady rain. The players played like it was a perfectly nice day and kept their focus and were patient when they needed to be. The weather didn't seem to get to them."
Texas A&M and Vanderbilt finished with twin scores of 293 (+5) to tie Tennessee for the lead. A three-way tie for fourth place was held by Florida, LSU and South Carolina with scores of 299 (+11).
Lucia Polo led the Lady Vols with a total score of 71 to finish one-under par. Her performance was highlighted by five birdies, including one on her last hole. She is currently tied for sixth place.
"That was an amazing round by Lucia," Pavon said. "She doubled her third hole and followed with a birdie and played solid golf from there on. Every time she made a mistake she followed it up with a birdie. It was just a really great round."
Anna Newell finished with a score of 73 (+1). Her effort put her in a tie for 11th place. Emmie Pietila carded four birdies to finish two-over par for a 17th-place tie.
Hannah Pietila birdied on her final hole to finish just three-over par with a score of 75. She had the final score to count towards the team score.
AJ Newell shot six-over for a first round score of 80.
The second round of the SEC Championship will begin tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start.
"I'm sure they'll be nervous and excited headed into tomorrow," Pavon said. "I hope to see them keep their composure and competitiveness. We've been in this situation before so I'm really just expecting some great golf."
