Lady Vols in Third at SEC Championship
April 18, 2015 | Women's Golf

HOOVER, Ala. -- In a tight race for the SEC title, the No. 14 Lady Vols finished the second round in third place. Tennessee carded an improved round of 291.
No. 13 Texas A&M maintained the lead with an impressive second round score of 277 (-11). No. 2 South Carolina moved up two spots to finish in second place.
Tennessee now has a combined total of 584 after carding rounds of 293 and 291.
"It was a good round, but it wasn't as good as it could have been," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We struggled on holes 14 through 17 and made a lot of bogeys. However, we did have three birdies to finish on 18. Without some of those mistakes we could have had a lower round and been closer to the top."
Freshman Anna Newell led the team shooting two-under 70. Her performance was highlighted by four holes under par, including an eagle on par four seventh. Newell jumped into a tie for eighth place.
"That was a really solid round for Anna," Pavon said. "She started with a birdie, had a careless double-bogey and from then on continued to hit shots. She had an eagle on hole seven, which really gave her a spark. She really hit the ball well today wherever she was on the green."
Sophomore Lucia Polo finished the day one-over par with a score of 73. She carded three rounds under par. Polo is currently in a tie for 11th place.
Sophomore Emmie Pietila finished the day with a score of 73, just one over par. She improved to a 21st-place tie. Her sister, Hannah Pietila, shot a twin score of her first round, three-over 75.
Senior AJ Newell finished the round with an improved round of 77 (+5).
"Hopefully, weather permitting, we get to go out there and play," Pavon said. "I know the the girls are frustrated with the mistakes from today, so they'll be fighting harder to correct those. Hopefully we'll have a great round and be able to move back up."
With rain expected overnight and all day Sunday, the decision for tomorrow's final round is expected to be made in the morning. If the course is playable, the final round is slated for a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. CT/11:00 a.m. ET.
