April 10, 2015 | Men's Tennis
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Senior doubles partners Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese were named one of the 2014 Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Amateur Teams of the Year, the organization announced Friday.
The Vols will be among those honored at the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet June 6 in Nashville.
Libietis and Reese had a year for the record books in 2014, winning two more national doubles titles -- including the NCAA championship -- and finishing their junior season ranked No. 1. In November, they became the first college team to win the Knoxville Challenger.
NCAA title in hand, Libietis and Reese were named the 2014 ITA Doubles Team of the Year and named to the ITA All-Star Team for the second consecutive season. They earned All-American status for the second time and All-SEC for a third time.
Reese, a native of Kennesaw, Ga., was invited by the USTA to play doubles in the 2014 U.S. Open, becoming the first current Vol to play in the main draw of the Grand Slam since 1987. Libietis, from Priekuli, Latvia, represented his nation twice during the fall semester in the Davis Cup.
Libietis and Reese are one of college tennis' extremely rare four-year doubles teams, having played together since freshmen. They enter the final weekend of the regular season with 92 career victories as a team, second most in Tennessee history.
Libietis and Reese, along with fellow seniors Brandon Fickey and Andrew Dromsky, will be honored Sunday in their final home match against Florida at Barksdale Stadium. First serve is at noon, and admission is free.
Additional teams being honored by the TSHF at the induction ceremonies include: Cumberland's baseball team, UT Martin's rodeo team, Vanderbilt's baseball team and Walters State Community College's golf team. Every team honored won a national title.
Vol hoops great Jimmy England will be among those inducted in the TSHF this year.
