BLUFFTON, S.C. -- The Tennessee men's golf team sits atop both the team and individual leaderboards after the second round at the Colleton River Collegiate. The Vols hold an eight-stroke lead, while junior Chad Merzbacher leads by two strokes heading to the final round.
On Monday, the Vols got off to a hot start by firing a 2-under par 286 during round one. Sophomore Jack Smith posted an impressive bogey-free 4-under par 68 to lead the squad out of the gate. Smith fell upon hard times during the second round, posting a 6-over par 78 to finish day one 2-over par and in a tie for 12th place.
Like Smith, Merzbacher was also 4-under par during round one until a double bogey on the 18th moved him to a solid 2-under par. Merzbacher proceeded to catch fire and lead the way during round two, firing a 3-under 69 to bring his day one total to 5-under par. He currently holds a two-stroke lead heading to the final round.
"I really didn't play all that well. I just got the ball in the hole," said Merzbacher. "I am extremely excited for tomorrow. I love being in the mix of winning a tournament." The junior will begin his final round at 10:10 a.m. (ET) off the first tee.
Sophomore Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara's day was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 third during round one. Freshman Lorenzo Scalise's day was also highlighted by an eagle; however, his came on the par-5 seventh. Both Serrano and Scalise finished round one 2-over par and followed it up with another 2-over par during round two.
Junior Michael Nagy shot a first round 76 (+4) followed by an even par 72 during the second round. He currently sits in a tie for 16th place with Scalise and Serrano at 4-over par. Fellow junior Michael Monroe was scheduled to compete as an indivdual; however, he became sick and chose to withdraw from the tournament.
Miami (OH) posted scores of 293-290--583 (+7) on day one to sit eight strokes behind the Vols and in second place heading to the final round. John Jackopsic of Boston College carded 73-68--141 (-3) to put himself two strokes behind Merzbacher on the individual leaderboard.
The Vols will begin the final round off hole one at 9:30 a.m. (ET) alongside Miami (OH) and Michigan State.
