PALM CITY, Fla. -- The Tennessee men's golf team finished tied for 11th place at the 2015 Valspar Collegiate Invitational. Freshman Lorenzo Scalise was the highest finisher for the Vols at 3-over par.
On Tuesday, the Vols carded their lowest score of the tournament, but it did not prove low enough. A final round 1-over par 285 moved the squad to a tie for 11th place at 27-over par for the tournament. Junior Michael Nagy led the way for the Vols during the final round, posting a 2-under 69 which included five birdies. Nagy finished in a tie for 35th place at 6-over par.
Scalise was the highest finisher for the Vols at 3-over par. The freshman fired a final round 1-over par 72, to move to a tie for 27th place. Sophomore Jack Smith also carded a final round 72, his lowest round of the tournament. Smith's final round included five birdies and placed him in a tie for 45th place at 9-over par.
Like Smith, fellow sophomore Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara also posted his best round of the tournament on Tuesday. Serrano Guevara was one of three Vols to card a final round 72 (+1). He finished in a tie for 54th place at 12-over par. Junior Chad Merzbacher posted his lowest score of the tournament on Tuesday as well; however, it was not consistent with his dominating play throughout the rest of the season. Merzbacher posted a final round 5-over par 76 to finish in a tie for 68th place at 20-over par.
Florida State posted scores of 278-276-281--835 (-17) to claim the team title, while Texas A&M's Greg Yates carded back-to-back-to-back 67s to capture the individual title at 12-under par.
The Vols will look to bounce back when they return to action April 4 at the 3M Augusta State Invitational in Augusta, Georgia.
