Tournament Stats
BLUFFTON, S.C. -- The Tennessee men's golf team proved dominant over the past two days, as the Vols went from wire-to-wire to claim the team title at the Colleton River Collegiate. Smith, Merzbacher and Nagy all posted top-10 finishes.
Heading to Tuesday's final round, the Vols held an eight-stroke lead. The squad posted its highest score of the tournament (+9), but finished the final round eight strokes ahead of Miami (OH), who took home second place.
Smith entered the final round in a tie for 12th place at 2-over par. The Knoxville native carded a final round 72 to finish the tournament tied for 4th place at 2-over par. Smith's fourth place finish was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 2nd and marked his second top-5 of the season.
Junior Chad Merzbacher held a two-stroke lead heading to the final round, but posted his highest round of the season (81, +9) to fall six spots to a seventh place finish. Fellow junior Michael Nagy was the third Volunteer to post a top-10 finish. Nagy posted a final round 1-over par 73 to finish tied for ninth place at 5-over par.
Freshman Lorenzo Scalise carded 3-over par on the final day to finish in a tie for 17th place at 7-over par. Sophomore Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara finished the tournament in a tie for 27th place at 9-over par.
Miami (OH) posted scores of 293-290-297--880 (+16) for a second place finish. John Jackopsic of Boston College carded 73-68-73--214 (-2) to tie for the individual title with Sam Weatherhead of Michigan State (71-72-71).
The Vols will look to build off their dominant performance when they head to the Jackrabbit Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada, on March 16.
