PONTE VEDRA, Fla. -- The Tennessee men's golf team finished 8th at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational which was played at Sawgrass Country Club over the weekend. Junior Chad Merzbacher and sophomore Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara both posted top 25 finishes.
On Sunday, the Vols finished the three-day event by posting a total score of 907 (+43). After a tough 13-over on the front, Tennessee posted an impressive 1-over par on the back to card a final round 14-over par and fall one spot to an 8th place finish.
Merzbacher recorded his fifth finish inside the top 25 of the 2014-15 season by finishing tied for 16th place on Sunday. The junior posted a 72 (E) during the final round which included one birdie and one bogey. He finished 6-over par, 10 strokes behind the leader. Serrano Guevara started the final round in a tie for ninth place, but fell to a T-25 finish after shooting his highest round of the weekend, a 5-over par 77. His T-25 finish marked his second top 25 of the season.
Freshman Lorenzo Scalise shot a final round 76 (+4) to finish in a tie for 45th place at 14-over par. Sophomore Jack Smith posted a final round 77 (+5), highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 8th, to finish in a tie for 57th place at 17-over par.
Competing as an individual, Michael Monroe found two birdies in the final round to post a 9-over par 81. He finished the tournament in a tie for 62nd place at 18-over par. Danny Keddie wrapped up his first tournament of the 2014-15 season for the Vols on Sunday. Keddie's final round included one birdie en route to a 12-over par 84. He finished the event tied for 79th place at 27-over par.
Texas posted scores of 301-280-291--872 (+8) to take home the team championship. Beau Hossler of Texas was the only player to finish the event under par. He captured the individual title after carding rounds of 76-66-70--212 to finish 4-under par.
The Vols will be back in action on March 9 when they travel to Hilton Head, South Carolina, for the Collelton River Intercollegiate.
