PONTE VEDRA, Fla. -- The Tennessee men's golf team finished 8th at the 7th Annual Sea Best Invitational which was played at TPC Sawgrass on the Dye's Valley course.
On Tuesday, the Vols finished the two-day event by posting a total score of 302-299-304--905 (+65). The day began with a two-hour frost delay that pushed Tennessee's 8:00 a.m. tee time back to 10:00 a.m. and caused the tournament to employ a shotgun start format. The Vols went off holes 7-10 and 18.
After shooting 6-over on the back side, Tennessee wrapped up the final round by carding a tough 16-over on the front to fall one spot to an 8th place finish.
"The greens were newly renovated and extremely firm," said Director of Instruction/Player Development Matt Henderson. "This in combination with high winds made for a very challenging golf course."
Junior Chad Merzbacher recorded his second top 10 finish of the 2014-15 season with a 6th place finish on Tuesday. Merzbacher posted a team low 71 (+1) during the final round which included two birdies, one bogey and one double bogey. He finished 7-over par, seven strokes behind the leader.
Michael Nagy shot a final round 77 (+7) to finish in a tie for 36th place at 19-over par. Nagy found two birdies on day one at the tough Dye's Valley course. Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara posted his highest score of the tournament, a final round 80 (+10) to finish in a tie for 43rd place at 21-over par.
Competing as an individual, Michael Monroe completed his first tournament of the year on Tuesday. The junior found three birdies in the final round, the most of any Vol, to post a 5-over par 75. He finished the tournament in a tie for 39th place at 20-over par.
Grant Daugherty, also wrapped up his first tournament of the 2014-15 season for the Vols. Daugherty found one birdie on Tuesday, en route to a 9-over par 79. He finished the event tied for 66th place at 26-over par. Jack Smith's final round included back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th holes, allowing him to play the back half at even par. Smith posted a final round 7-over par to finish in a tie for 69th place at 27-over par.
North Carolina posted scores of 288-296-289--873 (+33) to take home the team championship. UNLV's John Oda was the only player to not finish the event over par. He captured the individual title after carding rounds of 71-72-67--210 to finish even par.
The Vols will be in action again on February 27 for the John Hayt Invitational which is also in Ponte Vedra, Florida.
