W Tennis Swept in SEC Opener
February 27, 2015 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Lady Vols fell to 8-5 on the season after a 7-0 shutout by the Texas A&M Aggies on Friday at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
The SEC home opener didn't go as planned for the Lady Vols as the Aggies never allowed them to get any momentum during the match.
In doubles, the sophomore duo of Eve Repic and Laurence Guevremont lost their fourth straight match together after being shutout 8-0 by A&M's Ines Deheza and Stefania Hristov. Junior Tiffany Tavares and sophomore Victoria Olivarez came back from a 5-2 deficit to tie the match at 5-5, but the Aggies pulled away to win 8-5 and clinch the doubles point.
Singles didn't go any better for Tennessee as Texas A&M boasted five ranked players in the latest ITA polls, including three in the top 60. The Lady Vols were swept in each of their matches in singles.
Despite the bad loss, co-head coach Mike Patrick was still able to find positives from the match.
"We had a couple of people play real well," Patrick said after the match. "I thought we played well in doubles. We did really well on court 1 and had a chance to win there. We were very competitive at court 3. We didn't really get off the mark well at court 2, but I think that could be from a lack of practice lately. We started slow against a good team. In singles, Joanna and Eve probably couldn't have played much harder. We were just a little over matched."
The Volunteers will play on Sunday as they face the LSU Tigers at Goodfriend Tennis Center at noon.
"We are going to try to compete at every spot," Patrick said on preparations for the match. "We need to get over the thought that breaks are against us. We need to compete. Everybody has to compete. That is all we can really ask for. We have some bright spots, but we want to get some wins. That is going to take a team effort."
