December 10, 2015 | Football
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The honors continue to roll in for Vols returner Evan Berry following his electric season on the field in 2015. On Thursday, he was named a first team Walter Camp All-American at the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
Berry becomes the first Volunteer to be named a Walter Camp All-American since 2009 when his older brother, Eric, was selected as a defensive back. Eric Berry also earned Walter Camp All-American status in 2008.
The Fairburn, Georgia, native has had a week chocked full of accolades. On Wednesday night, Berry was named to the CBS Sports All-American Second Team. That honor followed his selection as the SEC Special Teams Player of the Year and a spot on the 2015 All-SEC Coaches' First Team on Tuesday. He has also been tabbed ESPN.com All-SEC and was picked as a first team All-American kick returner by Sports Illustrated earlier Thursday.
In 2015, Berry has emerged as the nation's top kick returner, leading the country in kick return average (38.3) and tying for second with three returns brought back for a touchdown. On Nov. 2, Berry became the first Volunteer kick returner to be named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week since Cordarrelle Patterson in 2012. His three kickoff returns for a touchdown tied the UT single-season record set by Willie Gault in 1980. Berry's total of 804 overall return yards (both kickoff and punt return yards) ranks as the fourth-most in a season in Tennessee history. His 34.8 career kickoff return average is also a new Tennessee record.
Thursday's announcement marks the 126th edition of the Walter Camp All-American teams. The teams are selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the 129 Football Bowl Subdivision schools and certified by Marcum LLP -- a New Haven-based accounting firm. In total, 25 players were selected to the first team while 27 players -- due to ties in voting -- were selected to the second team.
The Walter Camp All-America teams began including kick returners in 2001.
The 2015 Walter Camp All-America team members will be honored at the organization’s national awards banquet, presented by First Niagara Bank, on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
