November 29, 2015 | Women's Basketball
Nov. 29, 2015
With the loss, Tennessee fell to 5-1 at home this season.
UT's all-time record is now 1,282-287 and the Lady Vols are 407-29 all-time at Thompson-Boling Arena
The Lady Vols are now 23-14 all-time against Texas and 11-6 against the Longhorns in Knoxville.
Tennessee's starting lineup on Sunday consisted of Jordan Reynolds, Jasmine Jones, Bashaara Graves, Te'a Cooper and Mercedes Russell.
Sunday's game marked the third-straight game the Lady Vols had used that starting lineup. UT is 2-1 with that lineup this season.
Official attendance for tonight's game was 10,204.
Diamond DeShields finished with 24 points, scoring in double-figures for the third-straight game and the fourth time this season. She also hauled down 11 rebounds to record the second double-double of her career.
The 24 points and 11 rebounds were her most as a Lady Vol and her most since a 24-point, 12-rebound effort against Michigan State on March 25, 2014, when she played for North Carolina.
DeShields showed flashes of brilliance at the end of the first quarter. She hit a 3-pointer from the left corner with 2:37 left and stole a pass at midcourt, setting up an Andraya Carter layup to give UT a 13-7 lead. DeShields stretched the Lady Vols' lead back to six points moments later when she hit another trey from the left corner to put her team up 16-10.
She was also outstanding in the second half, scoring 14 second-half points, including 11 of UT's 17 third-quarter points
Jasmine Jones tied her career high with 11 rebounds, including eight in the first half. Her career high is 11. She previously had 11 rebounds against Georgia Tech on Nov. 11, 2012.
Tennessee outrebounded Texas, 45-41. The Lady Vols also had a 27-19 rebounding advantage in the first half.
Mercedes Russell notched three blocks. It is the fourth time in six games that Russell has had at least three blocks.
The loss snapped Tennessee's 27-game home winning streak, which dated back to a win over Auburn on Feb. 20, 2014. It also stopped Tennessee's home winning streak against ranked teams at eight games.
Tennessee's largest lead was six points. Both leads occurred in the first quarter. UT led 13-7 with 2:19 left in the first when Andraya Carter had a steal and a layup with 2:19 remaining. The Lady Vols led 16-10 with 1:30 left in the first quarter when Diamond DeShields made a 3-pointer from the left corner.
Texas' largest lead was the 11-point final margin of victory. Brooke McCarty made three free throws in the final 17 seconds to give the Longhorns the 64-53 lead.
Texas led 29-24 at the half, marking the fourth time this season that UT had held an opponent to under 30 points in the first half.
DeShields paced the Lady Vols with 10 first-half points to go with six rebounds. Jordan Reynolds led all players with eight rebounds before halftime.
Texas guard Lashann Higgs led all players with 14 points in the first half.
