Tennessee (1-1) comes into Thursday's game on the heels of a tough 69-67 loss at Georgia Tech on Monday night. The Vols led by as many as nine in the second half, but were undone by a big 17-3 run from the Yellow Jackets late in the period. UT had a shot to win the game at the buzzer, but Devon Baulkman's deep three was long.
Senior Armani Moore led Tennessee in scoring with 17 points. He was joined in double figures by Robert Hubbs III (13) and Jabari McGhee (10). Derek Reese paced the Vols on the glass with 10 rebounds.
Facing a much larger Georgia Tech team, Tennessee battled to out-rebound the Jackets by a 53-47 margin. UT also tallied more points in the paint, outscoring GT 44-36 down low.
A Win Would ...
- Make the Vols 2-0 at home this season.
- Improve UT's all-time record vs. current members of Conference USA to 31-18.
- Extend Tennessee's November home win streak to 56 games. The streak began in 1996.
- Give Rick Barnes a 21-1 career coaching record against current members of Conference USA.
About Marshall
- Thursday's contest marks the Thundering Herd's season-opener. They defeated Bluefield State 112-78 in exhibition action before dropping their final exhibition to Newberry, 101-89, on Sunday.
- Marshall is entering its second season under head coach Dan D'Antoni, who is the older brother of veteran NBA head coach Mike D'Antoni. Dan was an assistant on Mike's Suns, Knicks and Lakers staffs from 2005-14.
- The Thundering Herd posted an 11-21 (7-1 CUSA) record last season and return four starters this year.
- The Conference USA coaches projected Marshall to finish ninth in the 14-team league race this season.
- MU's top returning player is junior forward Ryan Taylor, who led the team in scoring (14.1 ppg) and rebounding (8.6 rpg) while starting all 32 games a year ago.
- As the team's "point forward," Taylor led Conference USA last season with 14 double-doubles, including a streak of seven-straight from Jan. 22 through Feb. 14. Last month, Taylor was named to the preseason All-Conference USA Team by the league's coaches.
- Sophomore juco transfer Terrence Thompson grabbed 17 rebounds and also added eight points in Marshall's exhibition vs. Newberry on Sunday.
- The Marshall roster features three international student-athletes, as Milan Mijovic and Aleksa Nikolic both hail from Serbia, and Aleksander Dozic is from Montenegro.
- Former Duke All-American and NBA point guard Chris Duhon is in his second season as an assistant coach at Marshall. He was on Duke's 2001 National Championship team.
Remarkable Rebounding Effort
- Despite a significant size disadvantage at Georgia Tech Monday, Tennessee managed to win the battle of the boards 53-47.
- The Volunteers' rebounding effort against the Yellow Jackets included 24 offensive rebounds and 19 rebounds by perimeter players.
- Tennessee's 53 total rebounds were its most since grabbing 53 during a four-overtime win at Texas A&M on Feb. 23, 2013. And it was UT's highest rebounding total in a regulation game since Jan. 28, 2012, when the Vols pulled down 53 boards in a 64-49 home win over Auburn (116 games had elapsed between that contest and Monday's game at Tech).
R3 On A Roll
- Junior wing Robert Hubbs III has scored 81 points over Tennessee's last six games, dating to last season (13.5 ppg).
- Despite missing practice time this month with separate knee and groin injuries, the Newbern, Tennessee, native is leading the Vols in minutes played (33.0 mpg) and ranks second on the team in scoring (15.5 ppg).
- In 66 minutes of action through two games, Hubbs has just one turnover.
Moore Still Stuffing Stat Sheet
- As he has throughout his Tennessee career, senior Armani Moore continues to do a bit of everything while he's on the court.
- Through two games, Moore leads the Vols in assists (3.5 apg), blocks (3.0 bpg) and steals (2.5 apg). He is UT's second-leading rebounder (7.0 rpg) and third leading scorer (14.55 ppg).
- The 6-4 Moore owns 83 career blocks. He needs just seven more blocks to move into a tie for 15th on Tennessee's all-time list.
