Bongart Advances to Quarterfinals

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Freshman Ashley Bongart advances to quarterfinals of the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic in singles on Friday.
With four Vols competing in the tournament, Tennessee jumped out to a fast start, winning five of its first six matches to begin the day. Bongart, freshman Sadie Hammond and junior Eve Repic were all victorious in the first round of play. Hammond defeated East Tennessee State’s Marina Espana, 6-3, 6-2, and Repic came back to beat Hanna Sohn from Memphis, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Bongart bested Laura Falceto from Florida Gulf Coast, 6-0, 7-5, in the first round and then beat Hailey Grillo of South Florida, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Freshman Kim Kermet bounced back after dropping her first match to beat Princeton’s Sara Goodwin, 6-1, 6-2, in the consolation bracket.
In doubles, Kermet and Repic bested the duo of Steffensen and Goodwin from Princeton, 8-5. Bongart and Hammond downed South Florida’s Cardosa and Grillo, 8-1. Both doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the bracket but fell to their opponents to end the day.
Bongart will face Florida’s Spencer Liang, who is the No. 4 seed in the tournament, in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. at the Lakewood Ranch Country Club.
