Volleyball Loses to South Carolina on Road

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Kendra Turner led Tennessee with 14 kills and setter Lexi Dempsey had a double-double, but the Vols lost 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-16) to South Carolina on Wednesday night at the Carolina Volleyball Center.
The Vols (20-10, 6-9 SEC) lost their fourth consecutive match and split the season home and away series with South Carolina (11-16, 4-10), having won 3-2 in an earlier meeting at Thompson-Boling Arena.
Tennessee plays its final road match of the regular season Sunday, taking on No. 15 Florida at 1:30 p.m. There are three matches left in the regular season.
Dempsey recorded her team-leading 13th double-double of the season with 26 assists and 10 digs. Kanisha Jimenez neared a double-double with seven kills and 10 digs.
In the first set, South Carolina took momentum with a 5-0 run to go ahead 16-13. The Vols eventually rallied to tie the match at 19-19, but South Carolina reeled off the next three points to take the lead for good. There were a combined 11 service errors between the teams in the first set. Jimenez served into the net on set point as the Gamecocks took the opener, 25-22.
South Carolina had another run to break away in the second set, going on a 3-0 burst to take a 19-16 lead. The Vols closed the gap to 20-19 on an ace by Lexi Dempsey, which caused Carolina to call a timeout. The Gamecocks won the next two points after the stop and went into the halftime break with a two-set lead after Dessaa Legros recorded a kill to end the second, 25-21.
The Gamecocks led the third set wire to wire, eventually extending their lead to seven points at 18-11 after a Legros kill. The Vols went on a 4-1 run to cut the lead to 19-15, capped by back-to-back kills by Turner. South Carolina called a timeout and then reeled off four points in a row, eventually winning the set 25-16 to clinch the match.
Tennessee out-dug South Carolina 55 to 54, marking just the second time this season that the Vols have lost the match when getting more digs. The Vols are now 18-2 when out-digging the opponent. Freshman libero Brooke Schumacher matched her career high with 15 digs.
