USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships
Hammond Falls in Semifinals
October 18, 2015 | Women's Tennis
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Freshman Sadie Hammond’s run in the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships came to an end on Sunday, following a loss to a top-10 ranked opponent in the semifinals.
In her first match of the day, Hammond faced Akvile Parazinskaite from Kentucky in the quarterfinals. It was a close match during the first set, going to a tiebreaker. Hammond edged out a close one, though, taking the tiebreaker 7-4. Using the momentum, she bested Parazinskaite in the second set, winning the match 7-6 (4), 6-4.
Unfortunately for Hammond, she was tasked with facing No. 7-ranked Sydney Campbell, who plays in the No. 1 spot for the reigning NCAA team champions, the Vanderbilt Commodores.
After winning four matches in the tournament, Hammond’s streak came to an end in the semifinals, as Campbell took the match 6-1, 6-1.
Although it was tough loss, Tennessee should be pleased with its freshman. In her first eight matches at the collegiate level, Hammond went 7-1, beating two ranked opponents and only losing two sets during the entire stretch. She won her flight championship at the Furman Fall Classic in September and can now add semifinalist in the Ohio Valley Regional Championships to her rapidly growing resume.
The Volunteers will be back in action on October 31, as they host the annual UT Fall Invitational at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
