Hammond Advances to Quarterfinals

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- During day three of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, the Tennessee women’s tennis team advanced three individuals to the round of 16 and one to the quarterfinals in singles.
Freshman Ashley Bongart began the day with a comeback win over Marta Morga from Memphis, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Junior Eve Repic bested Purdue’s Krisztina Kapitany, 6-1, 7-6 (2). To close out the second round for the Vols, freshman Sadie Hammond continued her dominating start to the season with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Nelli Ponomareva from Miami (OH).
Hammond didn’t slow up in the round of 16, either, beating No. 78 Aldila Sutjiadi of Kentucky, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow. She will face Akvile Parazinskaite from Kentucky.
“I'm really happy about the wins I've had this tournament, and I'm even more excited to compete tomorrow for a spot in the semifinals,” Hammond said after her matches.
In their round of 16 matchups, Bongart and Repic lost to ranked opponents and were eliminated from the main draw. Bongart fell to No. 56 Nadia Ravita from Kentucky, 6-3, 6-1, and No. 7 Sydney Campbell of Vanderbilt bested Repic, 6-2, 6-0.
Senior Tiffany Tavares, junior Brittany Lindl and freshman Kim Kermet all picked up wins in the consolation draw for singles, bringing their weekend to a close.
