Main Draw of Regional Begins Friday

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- After day one of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, qualifying has ended, and the main draw is set to begin on Friday at Schwartz Tennis Center and Lafayette Sports Center.
In qualifying, Tennessee had one doubles team and two singles compete throughout the day. Senior Tiffany Tavares and freshman Margo Taylor fell 8-7 (13) in a tiebreaker to Hitomi Naito and Burcu Tari from UT Martin.
In singles, freshman Kim Kermet lost to Xavier's Alexandra Brinker, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-4. Tavares bested Janina Berres from Memphis in the first round, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. A second consecutive three-set match took its toll, though, as a comeback by Tavares came up short against Tereza Hejlova from Western Kentucky, falling 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Two doubles teams will compete for the Vols in the main draw. Freshman Ashley Bongart and junior Brittany Lindl are set to play Andjela Djokovic and Nicole Robinson from Purdue, and junior Eve Repic and freshman Sadie Hammond will take on Andreanna Christopoulou and Cynthia Melita from Western Kentucky. Repic and Hammond are the No. 5 seed in the doubles bracket.
Hammond and Repic are both seeded in singles. Both players made it to their individual flight championship at the Furman Fall Classic in September. Hammond won her flight without losing a set, going 3-0, while Repic fell in a third-set tiebreaker in hers, finishing 2-1. Bongart and Lindl open the tournament with seeded opponents. Singles is scheduled to begin at noon.
Players will be given the opportunity to play in a consolation draw throughout the tournament as they are eliminated from the main draw.
The main draw will begin at 8 a.m. Friday, with two rounds of doubles to start the day then followed by a round of singles. Follow @ITAOhioValley on Twitter for live updates throughout the tournament.
