Vol Golf Finishes 11th at Carpet Capital

DALTON, Ga. -- The Tennessee men's golf team team closed out its first tournament of the season with an 11th place finish at the 2014 Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm in Dalton, Ga.
On Sunday, the Vols ended their three day tournament by posting a total score of 296-280-296--872 (+8).
Head coach Jim Kelson saw his team fall one spot to 11th place on the final day of play. Sophomore Chad Merzbacher was the highest finisher for the Vols. He finished the Carpet Capital in a tie for 29th after carding rounds of 69-72-76--217 (+1). Merzbacher's final round featured two birdies and six bogeys.
On Sunday, the Volunteers were led, for the second consecutive round, by sophomore Jack Smith. Smith shot a final round 72 (E) which brought his weekend total to 79-67-72--218 (+2). Smith sank five birdies on Sunday and ended the Carpet Capital in a tie for 32nd place.
Sophomore Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara, who recorded an ace in round one, finished tied for 48th after carding rounds of 73-75-74--222 (+6). Junior Michael Nagy found one birdie on Sunday, finishing tied for 57th with a score of 225 (+9). Italy native Lorenzo Scalise completed his first collegiate tournament tied for 60th place and a weekend total of 226 (+10). Senior Thomas Dunne participated as an individual and finished 69th.
At the end of Sunday, South Carolina and Georgia Tech held the top spots on the Carpet Capital leaderboard. The Gamecocks won the team championship by one stroke, while the Yellow Jackets had the winning individual Ollie Schniederjans who carded 72-64-68--204 (-12). Schniederjans also won the 2013 Carpet Capital individual title.
Tennessee will be back in action on September 21st in Chicago, Ill., at the Windon Memorial.
