Vols Finish 10th at 18th Windon Memorial Classic

SKOKIE, Ill. -- The Tennessee men's golf team finished 10th at the 18th Windon Memorial Classic at Evanston Golf Club in Skokie, Ill.
On Monday, the Vols ended their two day tournament by posting a total score of 286-290-291--867 (+27).
The Vols fell one spot to a 10th place finish on the final day of play. Sophomore Jack Smith was the highest finisher for the Vols. He finished the 18th Windon Memorial Classic in a tie for 23rd after shooting rounds of 69-72-73--214 (+4). Smith's final round featured one birdie and four bogeys.
During the final round, the Volunteers were led by junior Michael Nagy. Nagy posted a final round 70 (E) which brought his weekend total to 75-77-70--222 (+12). He bounced back from a double bogey on the first hole to sink five birdies and finished the Windon Memorial in a tie for 59th place.
After an impressive 1-under par second round, junior Chad Merzbacher recorded a final round 74 (+4) to finish tied for 26th place at 5-over par. Freshman Lorenzo Scalise finished on a high note by recording a birdie on the 18th. Scalise finished in a tie for 36th place after posting rounds of 70-74-74--218 (+8). Senior Thomas Dunne posted a final round 7-over par to finish 77th (+17).
At the end of Monday, California and Tulsa held the top spots on the Windon Memorial leaderboard. The Golden Bears won the team championship by 13 strokes, while the Hurricanes had the winning individual, Colton Staggs, who posted 69-73-63--205 (-5). Staggs tied Luke Donald's 2007 Evanston Golf Club course record of 7-under par (63).
A bright spot from the weekend, the Vols recorded 37 birdies, led by Nagy who carded nine himself. The 37 birdies were the fourth highest total, Michigan posted 47 birdies to lead the tournament.
Tennessee will be back in action on September 29th in Meadows of Dan, Va., at the Primrose Invitational.
